that the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games will be the most sustainable Games ever? The host venue for the 2012 Games and the Skandia Sail for Gold Regatta, Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, has been awarded a British Standard for Sustainable Events to ensure minimal impact on the environment from the events.
But it?s not just down to the Academy; you and your crew can do your bit for the environment too. Just check out these top tips from the RYA and The Green Blue.
Tips For Competitors
· Wash down and dry your boat to help prevent the spread of alien species. Do this before towing your boat to Weymouth and before leaving the regatta site.
· Remember to recycle. The venue will provide plenty of waste and recycling bins, so please ensure all of your rubbish goes into the correct bin.
· Refill water bottles at the water coolers rather than buying bottled water to help reduce plastic waste.
· Turn off taps and hoses when not in use to help save water.
· Your competition stickers will be applied for your boat, but did you know that they are recyclable? So why not stick them in the recycling bin at the end of the competition?
· Don?t bin your old or damaged sails. Just take them to the collection point at the Academy. They will be collected and then up-cycled into new products such as deckchairs, bean bags or bunting, giving them a new lease of life.
Tips For Officials, Volunteers, Safety Boat Drivers
· Refuel RIBs and fuel cans on the special designated green area of the fuel berth to prevent fuel spills.
· Carry Spill Kits on board RIBs to deal with any spills.
